Motivating yourself to achieve your goals
“You’re The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With”
It doesn’t matter what career, where you are in your life right now or what you’re doing tomorrow. If you want to be a professional ping pong player or be a successful entrepreneur you have to be around people with the same mindset and you also have to put the time in.
Theres a theory by Malcolm Gladwell that practicing any skill for 10,000 hours is sufficient to make you an expert. Is this true? Malcolm Gladwell published his book in 2008 that said this.
We all have those days where we wake up feeling like we can take over the world and then we have those days where we can’t even get out of bed. Do you have a goal that you just haven’t done much about trying to achieve? This doesn’t mean you don’t want it or its not real. It just means you haven’t figured out how you can turn the wanting into doing yet.
Lack of motivation or action toward completing your dream doesn’t mean it’s not real or that you don’t want it. It’s that you haven’t figured out how to turn the wanting into doing.
First things first, write down your goals and then write down the steps you need to achieve the end results. Now don’t focus on achieving the end goal – focus on achieving that first step, then the second, then the third. You’ll get a sense of achievement each time if you can block out the end result. Keep your goals realistic though, I often set myself targets then double the time I would of thought it would take.
Do this for as long as you can and when you start feeling a bit fed up use this method next. Start telling people what you’re doing, tell them your goals and what your next step is to achieve. If you surround yourself with positive people and people with the right/similar mindset they can start being there for the tougher times and perhaps offer advice throughout the process.
Another technique you can use is reward yourself – granted this one takes a bit of self discipline but if you can master it then you’ll be able to knock out those tasks time after time. I know i can power through my work during the day at my day job but when it comes to actually doing my own side projects I struggle because I know i can go play a game or go clubbing. Self discipline is essential for achieving those harder/boring tasks!
Lastly don’t be afraid to take breaks! you don’t need to work every minute of your spare time but you do need to stay consistent.
